UX Design: App & Web

Wellmi

/ medication & wellness tracker app and promotional website

The challenge for this project was to develop an application and corresponding website focused on social good. I decided to develop an app that would focus on making medication tracking easier and safer.

Wellmi is a new medication and health tracker focused on empowering users to take control of their health. The app allows users to set up a medication schedule, set reminders and track a vast array of symptoms from anxiety to blood sugar. It’s target audience is expansive as it can help anyone, from young busy professionals balancing hectic schedules to elderly patients with memory issues. It also allows the user to connect with a care team or send organized data right to a healthcare professional. Wellmi is the future of empowering people on their personal health journey.

The Problem & Goal

Many people have trouble remembering to take their medication - especially those with a multitude of medications to keep track of. This can cause frustration in users, overburden caretakers and provide dangerous situations of overdose or missing doses. People also have a hard time tracking health symptoms and seeing patterns between medications, lifestyle choices and medications.

The goal was to create an app that allows users to set up a medication schedule with easy daily check-offs and customized reminders. In addition I wanted to allow users to track health symptoms and review this data along with their medical compliance to get a better picture of their overall health. It was also important to include features to help those needing assistance, such as the ability to set up notifications linked to family or care staff if a medication hasn’t been taken and the ability to directly share all of the app’s data directly with doctors and medical providers.

Target Audience & Challenges

To learn about my audience I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was elderly people, especially those in care and with memory problems. Other primary user groups include: those seeking to track fertility, athletes, those with mental health issues and caretakers.

The variance of these users allowed me to realize that this type of app is not only useful to one group of people but could be made to improve the lives of anyone taking medication or simply wanting to track their health symptoms. This knowledge provided the primary challenge of this project, the need to create an app that could equally cater to all of these types of users, with their varying desires and needs. Taking this into consideration, I built a lot of customization into the app, which added a layer of complexity but resulted in a better more well rounded product.

Paper Wireframing

Beginning the design process on paper allowed me to explore options for layout more quickly and organically than if I started digitally. It also allowed for me to work through how the app itself should work and how many pages were needed.

Usability Study Findings

  • icon confusion: some users had difficulty understanding the meaning of navigational icons, so they were modified and changed to improve user experience.

  • missing feature: all users noted the inability to find the “add nickname” feature and so it was added to the customization section of the add medication walk through.

  • navigational loop: some users found having back buttons on the main navigation items confusing. Removing them created individual flows for each of the apps core functions without crossover.

Promotional website

As a companion to the app, I designed a promotional website to be used as a marketing piece and as a check in point for users and potential users to learn more about the app. To ensure an equivalent experience regardless of device, I created designs for both desktop and mobile.

Project Impact & Takeaway

I believe the main thing I learned from this project was how the scope and target audience of an idea can evolve after conducting research. A product that I initially envisioned to primarily be for elderly people was actually incredibly helpful to a large number of other target audiences. By focusing on all of the different needs I was able to develop a product that is customizable to help people in a way that suits them best. If this app was to be made a reality I truly believe it could be an incredibly helpful tool for medical compliance and connecting people to their health.

Next Steps for Wellmi

  • To research adding additional features - such as the ability to scan in prescription products using a barcode instead of requiring manual input.

  • Developing an on-boarding flow for the app.

  • Larger user testing to see how people with various needs experience the app.
