UX Design: Web

international programs

/ University of Toronto Program website

The ask for this project was to create a website that welcomes international students to the University of Toronto while showcasing the city and all of amenities it has to offer. The idea behind the overall design was to focus on the journey an individual student might go on while attending U of T. Often students can feel small, just a number within a huge organization like a university, so we wanted the site to feel conversational and personal, taking the user on a literal path through the homepage. The overall tone was based off of vintage postcards and tickets to reflect the excitement of travel.

creating a journey

We developed a path through the homepage leading the user from block to block of useful information a student looking to come to Canada for the first time might want. The journey begins with the plane and then travels on to the bike and scooter, moving as a scroll activated animation along minimalist illustrated streets. We wanted this level of interaction so the user would really feel like they were going on a journey through the content on the page while calling out interesting stats along the way.

Printed Components

To accompany the website, we created printed pieces to be handed out at university fairs and to guidance offices. These booklets were created to give students information on potential courses and their requirements, as well as to celebrate the anniversaries of both the International Summer Program and the International Foundations Program. Again, looking to focus on the individual journey, the cover shows a POV shot of a hand holding a passport with the question, ‘where will your journey take you?’.

The books utilize the same imagery, colours and graphic elements as the website to draw an immediate connection. We also created gradated slip covers with spot gloss topographic maps to draw additional interest.
